Lady Prudence Pelham, the daughter of the Earl of Chichester, met Gill when he visited Stanmer Park in Sussex to cut the joint memorial stone for her father and brother. She became his pupil during the early 1930s and was a frequent visitor to Pigotts. During this time she carved the present work but it was left unfinished in Gill's studio until he completed the carving sometime before 1940. The work had never been titled and was affectionately known as 'The Fat Lady' by his apprentices.
(see F. MacCarthy, Eric Gill, London, 1989, p.251).

John Skelton, the artist's nephew and apprentice, recorded in his diary that he finished the base of the sculpture on 5 October 1940 (private correspondence).
