Although Claes van Heussen, a native of Haarlem, was sufficiently well-known in his own day to be mentioned in Samuel Ampzing's history of Haarlem published in 1628, very few works by him are known. Particularly prominent among them is the Vegetable Stall, painted in 1630 in collaboration with Frans Hals (but only signed by van Heussen) and now in an English private collection (it was included in the Frans Hals exhibition, Washington, London and Haarlem, 1989-90, pp.224-5, no.33, illustrated in colour). A smaller work, also signed, was sold at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 2 June 1986, lot 32
