Lot Essay

This picture was sold in 1959 with certificates (and sold in 1982 and offered in 1987 with photocopies of certificates) by Dr. Georg Gronau, Dr. Wilhelm Suida and Dr. Gustav Gluck, dated 1929, 1931 and 1932 respectively, all as Marco Basaiti. That attribution was accepted, on the basis of a photograph, by Dr. Fritz Heinemann, who dated the painting c.1519 and pointed out that the types of the Madonna and Saint Roch derive from Palma il Vecchio and Rocco Marconi respectively
