Lot Essay

The present bronze is a copy of Clodion's nereid La Source, a life-size stone figure executed for the bathroom of the hôtel of Baron de Besenval in Paris, subsequently sold to Baron Edmond de Rothschild and currently not located. One of Clodion's most appealing works, it was widely reproduced during the 19th century.
