Alfred Barye (1862-82) was the son of Antoine-Louis Barye the most prominent French 'animalier' sculptor. Alfred worked both in the field of animal sculpture and that of mythological themes. The present bronze reveals his talent at modelling animals and his wit, the French inscription translates as 'Death of the Poacher' and clearly relates to the owl.
