Sir John Steell (1804-1891) trained for several years in Rome, and although encouraged by Chantrey to move to London, he lived the rest of his life in Scotland, dedicated to the promotion of the arts of his native country. Steell achieved great celebrity for his talents as a portraitist, in particular for his busts of Wellington, Florence Nightingale and Robert Burns.
