The present charming bust of a young boy was exhibited at the Royal Academy by Dalou as a portrait study in 1875. It was later incorporated into the Monument at Windsor for Queen Victoria, as the head of the eldest child, which was completed in 1878. A marble version of the head was exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts in 1890, and the original terracotta and a bronze version are in the Petit Palais, Paris.
The format of the bust follows older traditions of portraiture, however the strong and vivid modelling of the physiognomy are typical of Dalou's hand. The inclination of the head and the tousled hair add movement and life to the composed shoulders, and the plump and diminutive features of the young child are conveyed with consummate skill, capturing a fleeting expression.
