EGYPT
Burton went to Egypt in the autumn of 1879 in an attempt to recover money lost in his earlier speculative expeditions to the Midian in search of gold in the 1870s. He spent six months in Egypt and explored ruins in the El Faiyum oasis and 'natron Lakes' regions of Cairo with the philologist and archaelogist William Robinson Smith, returning to Trieste in May 1880
