Lot Essay

This composition, also known as 'The Stool of Repentance'. was engraved in 1784, 11 3/8 x 13½in. A drawing of the same date and size is in the Dunimarle House Collection. Further watercolour versions are that signed and dated 1792, 15 x 21½in. (Earl of Stair) and a larger work, signed and dated 1799, 13½ x 18in., the same size as this drawing (National Gallery of Scotland).

In 1795 Allan executed a companion Catecism of Kirk of Scotland, versions of which also date from 1794 and 1795
