Lot Essay

Although Towne arrived in Rome in October 1780 he did not visit Tivoli until May of the following year. His earliest surviving drawing in the area, of rocks and trees at Tivoli, is dated 1 May 1781. The present drawing belongs to the period after his return from Italy, when he executed watercolours on commission, frequently worked up from his earlier sketches
