Lot Essay

The soldiers are the 'Old Buffs', members of 3rd Regiment of the Line, now the East Kent Regiment. Another version of this drawing, in the Mellon collection (J Baskett and D. Snelgrove, The Drawings of Thomas Rowlandson in the Paul Mellon Collection, cat. 287) was published on 1st April, 1808 (J. Grego, Rowlandson the Cariacaturist, II, p. 85). A third version of the drawing, not showing the figures wading across the river, was advertised in Print Collectors Quarterly, October 1925, and there is a version in Auckland City Art Gallery
