Lot Essay

This picture may be identified with a Royal Academy exhibit of 1809, entitled Part of a Seaport vide Pausanius, Book II, ch. 12. The passage from Pausanias describes an ancient santuary to Athena with an altar of the winds situated along a coastal landscape.
