Lot Essay

This lot, while exceptionally large for a Birket Foster watercolour, corresponds in dimensions to the series of thirty watercolours engraved by the Dalziel brothers for Birket Foster's Pictures of English Landscape, published by Routledge in 1862 and again in 1881, the year of the present watercolour's exhibition at the O.W.S. The series was conceived in 1858 as fifty drawings and fifty vignettes of quintessential English scenes, reduced to thirty watercolours illustrated in an exquisitely beautiful volume (Art Journal, Dec 1862). Work from the series was exhibited, along with the present lot, at Manchester in 1887
