Lot Essay

There are two other known versions by Helen Allingham of the same farm, one of which was formerly in the collection of the Duchess of Sutherland, and another which was sold in these Rooms, 12 June 1992, (#19,000). Helen Allingham painted a number of farmhouses in Pinner with Kate Greenaway in the 1890s. Hedge's Farm is one of the oldest buildings in the area dating from the 14th Century. For many years it was part of the estate owned by the Pye family.

The cottage was lived in by a family by the name of Hedge who were tenant farmers. The Hedges bought the property from the Pye family in 1917 and Harry Hedge continued to farm there until 1936.
