Lot Essay

Frederick Hollyer (1837-1933) although primarily a professional photographer specialising in portraits, is now better known for his high-quality photographs of works by Watts, Rossetti, Burne-Jones and other artists. His association with Burne-Jones began in 1875 and continued until the latter's death in 1898. Hollyer's success in selling his photographs abroad helped to spread the influence of the British Pre-Raphaelite movement in Europe
