Lot Essay

D.Y. Cameron, Katherine Cameron was born in Glasgow, and studied there and in Paris. By the early 1900s she was illustrating children's books for the Edinburgh publishers T.C. and E.C. Jack. She specialised in fairy subjects in the 'Told to Children' series, notably Louey Chisholm's In Fairyland, 1904, and The Enchanted Land, 1906. The present watercolour dates from that period and was part of a group with fairy themes; others included 'The Princess by the Fairy Pool', which echoes the present composition, 'On the Roof-top' for Godmother's Tales, 1912, and 'The Performing Fairies'
