Lot Essay

This is possibly an illustration to one of Hallward's own books, published at his Woodlands Press (c. 1895-1913) or later, which tend to be mystical in theme. The composition clearly owes much to Rossetti, in particular Dante's Dream at the Time of the Death of Beatrice (see Virginia Surtees, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1971, pls. 95, 97).
