The inscription refers to Richmond's painting, celebrated in its day, of An Audience in Athens during the Representation of the Agamemnon (Birmingham City Art Gallery), exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1885. The studies are comparable in pose to some of the standing figures in the painting, but there is no exact correspondence
