This is a watercolour version of an oil of 1865 (Opus XXII; Swanson, op.cit., 1990, no. 60), painted two years before the artist settled in London as a result of the Franco-Prussian War. The oil, which was sold by Christie's in New York on 15 February 1985, lot 218, was the first picture that Alma-TAdema completed for Ernest Gambart, the dealer who did so much to promote his career; and the watercolour is the first example of his painting a watercolour after an oil and giving it an independent opus number. A preliminary study for the oil is also recorded.

WE are gateful to Professor Vera G. Swanson, Director of the Springville Museum of Art, Springville, Utah, for his help in cataloguing this lot
