woodcuts, from the set of sixteen, lacking Musicians and Onlookers (Holl. 96), Holl. 84 first state (of two), the rest only states, good to fair though sometimes unevenly printed impressions, possibly from the third Edition of circa 1600 lacking the stanzas at the top, some with watermark Double-headed Eagle (cf. Meder 222, dated circa 1598) or Gothic P (Meder 327, dated circa 1627), with margins, or trimmed variously into the subject, Holl. 81 with a small tear at the upper right sheet edge, Holl. 93 with a small loss at the lower right corner, occasional discolouration, lesser defects, otherwise generally in good condition, averaging S. 280 x 230mm.; Couple of a Wedding Procession, by G. Pencz (Holl. 149), from the same series, and three woodcuts of Wedding Dancers by another hand, some with watermark Double-headed Eagle (cf. Meder 222), with margins or trimmed variously on the borderline or into the subject, old tape at the reverse sheet corners (19)

Lot Essay

Schäufelein contributed sixteen woodcuts to a series of twenty illustrations 'The Wedding Dancers'. The remaining four in the series have been attributed to Georg Pencz. The present collection of nineteen includes one of the works by Pencz and three by other hands.
