ALBUM AMICORUM OF JOHAN FRANCK, Lawyer, of Douai, in Latin, (a few words in Greek, a few in French and German), ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM.
[Douai], 1575-78.
132 x 108mm., 70ff.: 31 vellum leaves comprising 24 FULL-PAGE PORTRAITS IN OIL (one with slight paint loss), 7 ruled and with names written in a single trained hand in readiness to receive portraits, one of these having a green preparatory ground, and 4 blanks; 39 paper leaves of which 17 have ink inscriptions and signatures in various hands, and 22 blanks. 19th-century French brown sheep, tooled in gilt and blind (rebacked, old spine laid down, modern green headbands), cloth box.
The Stammbuch of the Johan Franck, doctor in canon and civil law at the new university of Douai, founded by Philip II of Spain in 1562, with Franck's portrait undated and without arms, showing him dressed in black with a white ruff. This type of book originated in the universities of Germany, from whence Franck may have come. His students are all shown half length, mostly facing slightly to the right, and dressed fashionably in decorated doublets with lace ruffs and cuffs, most carrying a decorative sword; two are sombrely dressed with gloves instead of a rapier. Their portraits, painted in the style of panel portraits of the period on a dark ground, have captions in dedication to Franck at the foot, with the day and month the portrait was painted, with the year and their age in the portrait with their coats-of-arms.
The portraits are: Johan Franck U.I.D.; Antonius ab Harff [Jülich] aetat 18 1576; Robertus ab Harff aetat 20 1576; Johannes Harff aetat 18 1576; Nicolaus ab Harff aetat 17 1576; Carolus Hÿperger Austriacus aet 22 1575; Cornelius A Berchem Antverpiens aet 21 1575; Philippus Boxhoren Lovaniens aet 22 1575; Gregorius Dÿeve Lovaniens aet 20 1575; Johannes ab Eltz 1577 prise de la mort; Vincentius ab Hassel [Hasselt] aet 18 1576; Adamus ab Haetzfelt aet 21 1576; Ludolphus Falkenberger 1577; Renerus a Brempt aet 18 1578; Ioannes Wolf a Knÿsel Austriacus aetat 19 1575; Antonius Borch Lovaniens aet 23 1575; Rolandus ab Achelen Buscoduc aetat 22 1575; Franciscus ab [?Etten] Antverpiens aetat 21 1576; Henricus Wachtendonck Machlinianus aet 24 1575; Ioannes Wolffart Antdoverpianus aet 19 1575; Nicolaus van Etten Antver aet 22 1578; Ioannes Svetendal Canonicus Traiecti aet 21 1578; Dionisios Svetendal Traiect aet 15 1578.
