4° (213 x 143mm.). Woodcut title-border (slightly shaved), one folding view of Mount Sinai (laid down, four wormholes) and 43 illustrations, all with CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING. (Margins of x1 to end wormed.) 17th-century French light brown calf gilt bound for GÉDÉON TALLEMENT DE RÉAUX, large oval armorial on covers (Olivier 397 fer 1), spine in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in one, the others with small armorial (Olivier 397 fer 2) in each (neatly rebacked, old spine laid down, corners repaired). Provenance: G. Tallemant de Réaux (1619-1692, author of the Historiettes, binding).

A FINE COPY of the second augmented edition with additional illustrations. The first appeared in 1553. This work is dedicated to Belon's patron the Cardinal de Tournon and recounts the author's three-year journey (1546-1549) through Greece, Turkey, Palestine, Arabia and Egypt. He describes the local flora and fauna, mineral resources, customs, dress, antiquities and gives topographical descriptions of the major cities visited. Adams B-564; Cf.
