4° (275 x 200mm.). 8 leaves. Three woodcut coats-of-arms on title including those of Pius VII and Cardinal Doria Pamphili. Stitched, uncut. Provenance: Laetitia Pecci-Blunt (E.P. Goldschmidt catalogue note).

A RARE PAPAL EDICT prohibiting the export of antiquities and valuable works of art from Rome and the Papal States. Its provisions were inspired by the great neo-classical sculptor Antonio Canova, who is here named Inspector General of Fine Arts in Rome. Canova had been offered the post in August and at first refused it, but was eventually persuaded to accept. The aim was to save what remained of the antiquities of Rome after the removal to Paris, on Napoleon's orders, of many of the most famous pieces in the Papal collection, including the Laocoon and the Apollo Belvedere.
