DU TERTRE, Jean-Baptiste. Histoire Générale des Antilles habitées par le François. Paris: Thomas Jolly, 1667-1671.

4 volumes in 3, 4° (238 x 182mm.). Two engraved frontispieces, three armorials, 5 double-page maps, 18 plates (7 folding, 2 double-page), by Sébastien Le Clerc and others. (Occasional light browning or spotting, some slight marginal worming to volume I, small tear in one plate.) Contemporary French speckled calf gilt, small matching gilt-tooled oval sections inlaid in the centre of each cover in place of removed armorial stamps, (spines neatly repaired particularly at head and foot). Provenance: Jean de Catelan, Bishop of Valence (bookplate, 1702-1705 when Abbot of Boulancourt); René-François de Beauvau du Rivau (inscription as Archbishop of Narbonne, i.e. 1719-1739).

A FINE COPY of the second enlarged edition of one of the most authoritative accounts of the early settlement of the West Indies. It includes the exploration and discovery of the islands, their natural history, colonisation and the various claims for their sovereignty. The author describes in some detail the bucaneers and pirates, and the cocoa and tobacco planting and processing. The armorials appear to have been removed from the bindings in the 18th century. Nissen ZBI 1217. (3)
