Picart (shield slightly defaced by early ink strokes), engraved portrait of the author after Picart, engraved calligraphic section-title and 44 engraved plates with examples of calligraphic styles, after Figueiredo. (Piece torn away from lower margin of plate 21 but neatly repaired, tears to plates 11 and 34 skilfully repaired, occasional finger-soiling and pen-trials.) Mid-18th-century Spanish mottled sheep with later red morocco lettering-label (later end-papers, lower cover scored, slightly worn).
The complete edition of Figueiredo's writing book, also published without the text as a volume of 45 plates only (Brunet I, 264). There are at least three different title-pages for this work, all by the same printer and undated, differing in their typographical arrangement and the paper used. The author's engraved colophon on plate 44 is dated 1718, but the licenses are dated 1722. Borba de Moraes I, p. 266 ('a rare work'); Berlin Kat. 5246.
