GRISONE, Federico. Title in red and black with woodcut border incorporating classical equestrian scenes, elaborate woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces, 88 full-page woodcut illustrations, some repeated, of the anatomy, accoutrements and schooling of the horse, including 20 of tournament scenes, 1 folding woodcut plate of the points of the horse. (Tear to folding plate and occasional marginal tears, some light spotting and browning.)
Bound with: Johannes RUELLIUS (1479-1537). Roszarsznei. Translated by Gregorius Zechendorffer. Nuremberg: 1175. 2 parts. Title in red and black with elaborate initial letters, woodcut armorial frontispiece on verso, woodcut illustration of the points of the horse. (A few small wormholes to lower margin, some browning and offsetting.)
2 works in 1 volume, 2° (300 x 200mm.). Contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, with original clasps (slightly soiled, neat repair to front cover, wormhole at head of spine). Provenance: G.I.M.T. (note of purchase dated 1575, name erased).
Grisoni's work was first published in Italian in 1550, and had been translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese and English by the end of the century. The first German edition was published in 1570: this appears to be the second edition, which, according to Mennessier de La Lance, "contient des additions très importantes".
Ruellius was physician to François I, and was commissioned by the king to translate into Latin the collection of fragmentary Greek manuscripts on horse care, known as the Hippiatrique, which had first been grouped together in the 10th century. Ruellius's Latin translation appeared in 1530: the first printed version in the original Greek was published in 1537. Mennessier de la Lance Bibliographie Hippique, vol. I, p. 581 and vol.
