Large 8° (254 x 157mm.). Parallel text in Italian and French. Engraved portrait of the author by C. E. Gaucher after La Tour, 6 plates after Jean-Jacques-François Le Barbier, with tissue guards. Contemporary French red straight-grained morocco, gilt, g.e. Provenance: Alfred Piet (bookplate, sale 1902); René Descamps-Scrive (booklabel, sale Paris, 21-23 March 1925, lot 142).
A FINE LARGE-PAPER COPY ON PAPIER VÉLIN. The Descamps-Scrive catalogue describes this copy as a "superbe exemplaire" and a "très belle reliure". There is a small repair to the top left-hand corner of the back cover, probably by the original binder at the time the binding was executed. The Lettres were claimed to have been translated from quipus, an ancient Peruvian mnemonic device employing coloured, knotted strings, and, from its first publication in 1747, the book stimulated an ongoing controversy on the true use of quipus. The plates, here in their state before letters, were engraved by Gaucher, Patas, Lingée, Ingouf, Halbou and Choffard. Cohen De Ricci 447; Brunet II.1690
