Volume I: engraved frontispiece, dedication portrait of Archduke Leopold William of Austria (small neat repair to outer margin), six plates and one table; volume II: engraved plate of Apollo (conjugate with title), 14 plates, 2 double-page. Numerous woodcut illustrations and diagrams, a few full-page. Contemporary German calf-backed stained vellum, spine in six compartments with raised bands, the top compartment with a crowned FW monogram (spine split and chipped, covers rubbed, ties lacking). Provenance: F.W. (binding).

FIRST EDITION of Kircher's encyclopedia of music. He was assisted in its compilation by A.M. Abbatini and J. Viva, and about 1500 copies were printed. The first volume deals with the theory and history of music, the second with practical side of music-making including not only conventional instruments but also water-organs, a speaking-tube for conversing over long distances and a mechanical device for composing music.
