[MAGGIALI, Guiseppe.] Ragguaglio delle Nozze delle Maestà di Filippo Quinto e di Elisabetta Farnese... celebrate in Parma l'Anno 1714. Parma: Stamperia di S.A.S., 1717.
2° (315 x 210mm). Engraved frontispiece by G. B. Sintes after Ilario Spolverino, 5 large folding plates by T. Vercruysse and M. Francia after Spolverino, including a plan of Parma Cathedral. (Some plates neatly repaired along folds and at inner margins.) Contemporary speckled calf, spine with fleur-de-lis in gilt (somewhat crude repairs to extremities).
An account of the negotiations leading up to, and the magnificent festivities held to celebrate the marriage of Elisabetta Farnese to Philip V of Spain. It was as a result of this union that Parma passed from Farnese to Bourbon hands in 1731. The marriage was arranged by the Vatican, and Cardinal Aquaviva acted as proxy for Philip at the ceremony. Pope Clement XI then sent Cardinal Gozzadini as his legate to bless the marriage: the cardinal's entry into Parma, accompanied by 24 mules bearing his luggage, his family and chaplain, a master of ceremonies, the ducal party and 600 carabinieri, is the subject of the largest plate (645 x 900mm.) by Ilario Spolverini, the Farnese court painter. Lipperheide Si 36; Cicognara 1491; Berlin Kat. 3060; Vinet 567.
