4° (233 x 168mm.). Engraved title, 2 plates, 28 illustrations (27 full-page). (ã4 with tear in outer blank margin, 2G3 holed at inner margin, pp. 204-5 soiled.) Contemporary limp vellum. Provenance: early note of purchase, dated 1666.

Francis Malthe, an Englishman employed in France, published a number of similar works (in French and English) from 1629 onwards. In the 1630s he was responsible for the introduction the mortar into the French service. The work consists of five treatises: the first on artillery in general; the second on bombs and mortars; the third on "artificial fire"; the fourth on the mining and undermining of walls; the fifth concerns fireworks.
