MAROZZO, Achille. Opera Nova [chiamata Duello]. Venice: heirs of Marchio Sessa, 1568.

4° (210 x 153mm.). Elaborate woodcut title, 83 woodcut illustrations of men in various duelling positions, including 55 full-page. (Occasional marginal damp-stains, hole to lower blank margin of N6 caused by a paper fault.) 17th-century limp vellum (spine with a few small cracks). Provenance: George Augustus Coombe (armorial bookplate).

Reprint of the first illustrated book on fencing and duelling, originally published in 1536 by Marozzo, a Bolognese 'master-general of the art of arms'. (Although Cockle records a 1517 edition, this has been found to be a reprint of the present 1568 edition, with the date printed wrongly.) This is the second Sessa reprint: the first had appeared in 1550. Both use the original Modena 1536 woodcuts. This copy bears an inscription on the verso of the front endpaper: "Cmpto a di 22. Agosto 1678 dal eredi del h.y. Parigi 32.13.4-". Cf. Mortimer/Harvard Italian 287; Cockle 744.
