Paul of Aegina studied and practised medicine in Alexandria in the 7th century A.D., and compiled a review of earlier Greek medical proceedures entitled Epitome medicae libri septem based mainly on Oribasius. His most important and original contributions are in Book VI, on surgery, here translated by Tolet, a doctor at the hospital at Lyon, and writer and translator of medical and historical works. Tolet's translation was published again by Dolet in 1542, this time claiming to be "Nouvellement traduicte de grec", rather than "de Latin" as in the 1540 edition. The present copy has several marginal annotations and a signature on the title in the same hand has been partially erased. Bibliotheca Walleriana I, 7246; Brunet I.59; cf. Wellcome Historical Medical Library I, 4876 (1542 edition); Dictionary of Scientific Biography, volume 10, pp. 417-9.
