POSTEL, Guillaume (c.1505-1581). De Etruriae regionis, quae prima in orbe Europaeo habitata est... Florence: Lorenzo Torrentino, 1551.
4° (203 x 142mm.). Architectural woodcut title border. (Single wormhole in first 8 leaves.) Late 18th-century Italian vellum, the flat-back spine gilt with title and arms of Pope Pius VI. Provenance: Achilles Pirminius Gasser (1505-1577, ownership inscription on title, recording the purchase of the book in Augsburg on 7 March 1567); Pope Pius VI (d.1799, binding).
FIRST EDITION WITH A FINE PROVENANCE of this history of ancient Etruria and the antiquities of Tuscany. It once formed part of a 'sammelband', possibly assembled by Gasser, but was rebound as a separate work for Pope Pius VI. Gasser was an intellectual of some repute and was apparently equally erudite on matters medical, political or theological.
