Lot Essay

The present picture dates to the late 1770's and is therefore one of the earliest in a series of self-portrait studies made by Opie throughout his career. The present picture relates most closely to the painting exhibited at the Tate Gallery March-April 1963, no. 38 (Romney Fox Collection).
