Lot Essay

The design of this table is a variant on one of the most elegant forms used in Europe in the early 19th Century. The x-shaped end-support was perhaps most famously used by Adam Weisweiler (see, for example: P.Lemonnier, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, p.88). It was used in England by John McLean for a series of games-tables including one at Saltram House, Devonshire (see: S.Redburn, 'J.McLean and Son.', Furniture History, 1978, pl.43A). Another English variant is a work-table by James Newton, sold anonymously, Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 41.
