Lot Essay

Note: During the Crimean War, a German legion had been recruited. After the war, about a quarter of the men volunteered to complete seven years service in Military Settlements, founded in 1857, in the Eastern District of Cape Colony and in British Kaffraria. This letter is from one of these volunteers.
