Known as the 'Brass Tank' in the Vintage Motorcycle Club, this AJS came into the possession of John Lawrence in October 1935. As a result of the unique tank on the machine, John Lawrence was also nicknamed Brass Tank!
It was discovered in a small motorcyle dealers in the Victoria area of London and was pretty much in standard trim. His wife paid #6 for the machine as a present.
John completely overhauled the AJS and used it until the war in 1939, when it was laid up in an unsuitable shed until 1944. Whilst out of use, the petrol tank rusted through and the unique brass tank was hand made by one Philip Brewster, a very well known engineer and 'Tuner' of the 1920's. During John's ownership the bike has been road raced, hill climbed, sprinted and generally well used including several VMCC Banbury Runs. It was in regular use until ill health prevented him riding in 1990. The machine is believed to be in good order. A large quantity of period photographs, all the old style log books and V5 form and a set of MoT certificates between 1961-1989 are included.
