The name MG has always been linked with sporting cars ever since their first car was developed, a sports varient of the Morris Oxford, but many forget that MG stands for Morris Garages and that Morris was always the parent company. In the case of the MG 1300 this was in reality a case of 'badge engineering' and was merely a Morris 1300 given a new badge and grill in the attempt to increase sales for BMC. The 1300 was announced in 1967, but first appeared in 1962 as the Morris 1100 which was the successor to the Mini.
Again designed by Alec Issigonis, it did introduce some innovative features such as Hydrolastic suspension. New to the MG range yet common to other Morris models was the BMC A series engine an overhead valve, in-line, four cylinder which was transversely mounted. It was also the first MG to have front wheel drive. The styling was new with plenty of room and set new standards in comfort and ride in the small car range and sales were extremely good. The MG range in its various engine guises lasted from 1962 until 1971.
This Mk II, which had the uprated engine producing 70bhp at 5,250rpm has been in the same ownership for the past five years. Three years ago the engine was rebuilt including new pistons/conrods, big ends and main bearings. At the same time a new clutch was fitted and since this rebuid the car has only covered about 2,000 miles. The bodywork is said to be generally very good and a couple of poor areas at the bottom of the front wings and one bottom door skin have been attended to. Before the auction the owner is intending to respray the car. The tyres are described as almost new and it has a current MoT certificate.
