Lot Essay

The park at Marquayrol was a favourite subject for the artist and is located in Labastide du Vert which lies twenty kilometers west of Cahors. Perched on the side of a hill, Martin's house had a superb view over the valley, with its towering poplars, which stretched out below. A peasant to whom he described his property, solemnly declared: "Why yes. I see, some land for rabbits! The house was named Marquayrol, the etymology of which was certainly 'Mas Cayroux' - the house of pebbles." (Jacques Martin-Ferrières, Henri Martin, Paris, 1967, p. 58)
Sold with a photo-certificate from Cyrille Martin, dated Vincennes à Saint-Denis, le 24 novembre 1990.
