Lot Essay

The present garden centrepiece, together with other identical examples, was a nineteenth century addition to the gardens at Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire, the seat of Lord Leigh. It would appear that one was placed at the centre of the south front, in front of the formal layout leading down to the River Avon, and that others were situated at the boundaries of the garden, originally landscaped in or around 1720. It seems likely that the centrepieces were added to the garden during the 1830s when alterations were carried out by Mrs James Henry Leigh.
