Lot Essay

George Michael Moser, R.A.: Born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland 17 January 1706. In his early days he studied in Geneva until 1720 when he came to London and worked under Hayd. Is best known for his enamels on boxes, watchcases and seals, and was commissioned by both King George II and King George III. He became an original member of the Society of Artists, where he exhibited 1760-1767, and was First Keeper and also original member of the R.A. He died 24 January 1783. The original portrait of the Duchess of Marlborough and her daughter, Lady Caroline Spencer was executed by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1764-5 at Blenheim. Portrait paintings on enamel by Moser are exceedingly rare.
