The Graeco-Egyptian style of these chairs, with their Grecian 'tablet' crest rail centred by a palmette and sabre legs, relates to chairs designed by the connoisseur Thomas Hope (d.1831) for his Duchess Street mansion/museum and illustrated in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London 1807, plate XIX figs 3 and 4
