Designed in the George III 'antique' style around 1780, the rectangular back with triple bead-enriched pilasters with foliate capitals and bases relates to that of a suite of furniture from Normanton Hall attributed to Messrs. Chippendale of St. Martin's Lane. (see C. Gilbert, Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, fig 171)
