These lanterns relate to the celebrated model now hanging in the antechamber of the Royal Chapel at Versailles and popularised by H. Havard in 'Dictionnaire de l'Ameublement et de la Decoration', Paris 1898, pl. 15. The design was consequently adopted by Saunier, Duval & Cie of 99 Avenue de la Republique, Paris, who specialised in Belle Epoque 'Bronzes d'Eclairage'.

A lantern of the same model was sold by Sir Christopher Beauchamp of Langley Park, Norfolk at Christie's South Kensington, 8 May 1991, lot 95
