The original stone carving of this subject (private collection) was first exhibited in the Whitechapel Art Gallery Summer Exhibition in May 1914. Unable to afford to buy stone himself, Brzeska frequentely used off-cuts from the stonemason's yard which adjoined his Putney studio. The shape of the available stone therefore to some degree dictated the form of the carving
