The Qur'an from which this leaf comes was ordered by the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun and was intended for the Great mosque at Mashhad. However it never left Kairouan where it was executed and most of the manuscript is now in the National Library, Tunis. Other folios are in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and private collections: other leaves were sold in these rooms as lot 66 on 9th November 1977, lot 83 on 25 November 1985 and lot 303 on 10th October 1989.
