The inscription is from the Qur'an, sura xxxvi, Ya Sin, v.71: [Have they not seen how We have created for them of Our handiwork the] cattle so that they (an'aman fa-hum la-ha) [are their owners].

An inscription tile almost certainly from the same composition is in the David Collection, Copenhagen, (Louisiana Revy, Vol.27, no.3, March 1987, no.135, p.93). That example, with phoenixes above and of identical size, has traces of gold and enamelled decoration over the glaze.
