Lot Essay

Where the patination is thin, the metal colour shows it to have a high tin content; there is very little yellow in the colour.

The form and decoration on this ewer closely relate to those of a ewer sold in these rooms 28 April 1992, lot 220. The shapes of each are almost identical and both have a nearly plain upper section coupled with a lower section with floral decoration. The decoration on the former example was of a higher standard of execution than this, but both draw their decorative motifs from the same repertoire. For details of other ewers of this group see the footnote to that lot.
