Lot Essay

The arms are those of Van Reverhorst. Cf. D. Howard and J. Ayers, op. cit., p. 400, pl. 398 for an identical plate. The author suggests that this is the only Chinese armorial service which gives the arms of the eight great-grandparents of the owner. Cf. also M. Beurdeley, op. cit., p. 190, cat. 174, for the plate in the Musée Guimet, Paris. C. le Corbeiller, op. cit., p. 99, illustrates a covered sugar bowl, sauce-boat and cup from this service in a private Dutch collection and in colour, a dish, p. 97; and D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer illustrates the plate in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, op. cit., p. 274
