Lot Essay

The back of the dish bears a Russian inventory letter and number painted in red.
The arms are those of Catherine the Great of Russia who reigned from 1762-1796. Cf. M. Beurdeley, op. cit., p. 126 and cat. 210 for a single plate from this service, formerly in the Pierre Blazy Collection, Paris. The elaborate gilt scrollwork around the border is inspired by Meissen design. Cf. also C. le Corbeiller, op. cit., p. 110 for the example in the Helena Woolworth McCann Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, also illustrated by F. et. N. Hervouet and Y. Bruneau, op. cit., p. 332, pl. 14.23
